National Assembly Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Secretariat has signed a Memorandum

Islamabad, Pakistan – 18th March 2019: National Assembly’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Secretariat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC), Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is aimed at further strengthening cooperation on Localisation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that shall contribute to the achievement of SDGs in Pakistan for improving the socio-economic situation of the Pakistani population.

Mr. Riaz Fatyana and Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, Secretary General
United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific(UCLG ASPAC) signed the agreement.
Speaking at the occasion the Honourable Convener, National Parliamentary Taskforce on SDGs Mr. Riaz Fatyana said that the SDGs Secretariat was established to provide parliamentary oversight, evidence based legislation and technical assistance to the Parliamentarians in tracking progress of SDGs in Pakistan”.

He further highlighted the Parliamentary Taskforce’s leadership role and the importance of partnerships to move Pakistan’s development agenda forward. He said, “The Parliamentary Taskforce on SDGs is taking ownership in achieving the development targets in Pakistan with the help of its partners like United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC). We want to build this Secretariat into a proper institution that will have a broader scope of work to achieve the SDGs in Pakistan.”

Reiterating the importance of strong partnership, UCLG ASPAC Secretary General Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi expressed that “We are proud to welcome the Parliamentary Task Force on SDGs as our key partner. Through the Task Force’s strategic guidance and political support, we can ensure that our project’s activities on the ground fit into the country’s overall plans and actions. As importantly, our work with various stakeholders at the forefront of local level will provide important contribution to Pakistan’s SDGs implementation, including in evaluating its progress.”
